JGN mount optical fiver to layer 1, ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) to layer 2, and IPv6 to layer 3.
ATM network consists of ATM switches and connection equipment 66 access point installed throughout Japan. The circuit zone which connects ATM switches has 2.4Gbps backbone and other zones centers 150Mbps, its circuit capacity is between 50Mbps-600Mbps. Operation and management such as path installment and response to breakdown is undertaken by JGN-NOC (JGN Network Operation Center).
IPv6 network consists of router point and bridge point and 4 points such as Tokyo University, Okayama IPv6 interoperability center, Kyusyu University and NTT Doujima (Osaka) are major center that links to 49 access points throughout Japan which access to IPv6. At JGN-ROC (JGN Research Operation Center), installment of the whole IPv6 network and monitoring are operated as a part of research development and installment and management is done at each router point.
